Adrian Moreira Presentations Reflections

Adrian Moreira

These last presentations given by my classmates were based on the most important problems we are facing today. Essential current-day issues were addressed such as racism, education, and the pandemic/healthcare. I came out with a more grounded perspective on reality and how these issues have shaped and affected us, along with a heightened awareness of my surroundings.

Group three presented first. This group tackled the racism dilemma speaking on how it has been a problem in history and remains a problem to this day. From deeply engraved racism with the confederacy that was attempted to be hidden by the U.S educational system, to current-day police brutality being challenged by the resisting force of the Black Lives Matter movement. Historical information given to us on slavery had been distorted in attempts to keep a good face on America. The group also mentioned how racism towards Asians is becoming more prominent due to beliefs that they brought the pandemic to the U.S. My answer to that is: not every Asian had Coronavirus, not every Asian brought into the U.S, and not every Asian lived in Asia while the pandemic was spreading. Learning these things from this presentation, seeing how after years of oppression the abuse continues, I feel motivated to make a change and be an equal rights advocate for everyone in and out of my community regardless of what their color might be.

I was in group two, we presented second. Our presentation was based on the pandemic/healthcare background. We addressed the pros and cons we’ve faced with COVID, both the U.S and foreign countries. We spoke on having or not having healthcare and how it has affected us financially along with us not being able to work, therefore having to rely on financial assistance from the government. Guidelines on how to stay protected from the virus (CDC) as well as the effects COVID vaccines have on us (mortality rates and side effects) were also brought up. News clips were shown about the virus, giving us information we either already knew, or needed to know about it. My part in the presentation dealt with explaining what happens to those who do have healthcare and get infected by coronavirus. Participating in this definitely opened my eyes to potential financial burdens me and my family could have faced if we did not have insurance.

The third and last group to present was group one. The topic they talked about was education. They spoke on changes forced to be done due to coronavirus (remote learning) and how it has affected the students. Mental health issues were brought to light by discussing specifically how many students during this time are suffering from depression and other mental issues along with change of school-work environments. They addressed how the school system has been ignoring this issue and how suicide attempts are being neglected as well.

During and after all of the groups presentations, including mine, I felt more knowledgeable in conjunction with feeling less ignorant. I gathered a better understanding of the importance of understanding and standing up to make a change and maintain health, safety, and peace for me, my loved ones, and those around me.
