Speech

Professor Sinkoff

During the Group presentations I learned more about race and education. There was new information that I learned from the other groups such as race. All over the world, race is used by others to assign meaning to the way you look people will use physical characteristics like nose shape, eye shape, hair texture and most infamously, skin color to categorize race. Race isn’t a tangible concept, Social Construction Theory determines it’s more of a social idea created by institutions in society, meaning that it is created by society and is constantly changed. The notion of race is perpetuated and conserved, and therefore, must be changed by adjusting society’s preconceptions about race, institution’s structure and laws that are negatively based on race, and how education and awareness about race can create positive change. Especially here in the United States, but also in other countries around the world, certain races are placed in social hierarchies, creating inequality for accessible treatment and opportunities for one race over another.

While prosecuting racial attacks against Asians and people of Asian descent. The pandemic continues to unleash a tsunami of hate and xenophobia, and urges governments to act now to strengthen the immunity of our societies against the virus of hate. Racism and physical attacks on Asians and people of Asian descent have spread with the Covid-19 pandemic, and government leaders need to act decisively to address the trend. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, Asians and people of Asian descent have been targets of derogatory language in media reports and statements by politicians as well as on social media platforms, where hate speech related to Covid-19 also appears to have spread extensively. Lately they are Increases in racist rhetoric have coincided with increases in racist attacks. Since February, Asians and people of Asian descent around the world have been subjected to attacks and beatings, violent bullying, threats, racist abuse, and discrimination that appear linked to the pandemic.

The Pandemic of COVID-19 is changing the entire world, and the domain of education is not an exception. After the latest school closings, millions of students in the US and other countries have to stay at home. It means that the impact of online education becomes much more significant. COVID-19 showed which educational systems were flexible and prepared for emergencies and which were not. In the majority of countries, people cannot gather in groups for any purpose, including classes. Lots of educational facilities are closed. Universities lose big money because of the need to adapt to new conditions. For students, the situation is also unpleasant because their classes are not removed but replaced by online education. For lots of such people, it is even more difficult than traditional classes. All classes are transferred to remote format, while digital platforms, such as Zoom and Skype, become essential aspects of education. They are useful for the majority of academic activities. The pandemic of COVID-19 has a significant impact on the system of education. Restrictions on public gatherings make educational facilities transfer their classes to the digital domain, where they are conducted with the help of Zoom and similar applications. Educators assign essays and online tests to evaluate the knowledge of their students. For lots of learners, this format of education is even more difficult than a traditional one. If you are an optimist, there is still an opportunity to find something positive in the current situation. The crisis spurs international cooperation and offers hope that collective efforts will help to solve problems of specific educational systems.
